2011 in Review: Top Farmingdale Fire Stories

A recap of the top Farmingdale stories of 2011.

As 2011 comes to a close, is recapping the top stories of the past year. Farmingdale's three fire departments - , and the - had a busy year protecting the community.

Top Fire Stories of 2011

: A February fire at on Fulton Street shut down the area for several hours, with smoke visible as far as Wantagh. . The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office and the shop reopened in a new location.

: A collision between a van and an oil truck in September resulted in an injury and a fuel leak on Round Swamp Road. Village of Farmingdale firefighters contained the estimated 30-gallon spill of diesel fuel before it contaminated the local storm drains. The driver of the van was transported to NUMC and the Nassau County Hazardous Materials unit

Six total fire departments helped control a July brush fire, which persisted for two days and extended to Straight Path Road, requiring a specialized fire vehicle called a Sump Jumper to climb the train tracks to pump water to the brush. One firefighter was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for heat exhaustion.

A student who hit his head was transported by a Nassau County Police Department Helicopter in June. The Village of Farmingdale Fire Department supervised, stretching a precautionary line from Engine 924 on the field.

Two civilians were injured in a February morning fire at 21 Executive Blvd. in East Farmingdale. The building houses Wrap-N-Pack, an industrial packaging supply company. The interior sprinklers were activated and LIPA was called to the scene to shut the building gas down.

The Village of Farmingdale fire department assisted at the scene when a black SUV driving south on Main Street overturned after swerving to avoid a dog on a June morning.

A motorcyclist was injured in June when the motorcycle and a car collided at the corner of Main Street and South Front Street, closing Main Street in both directions.

No one was injured but there was some damage after a fire broke in a computer lab at in December.

: One person was injured in a July car accident on Conklin Street and Walnut Street. Both Nassau and Suffolk County Emergency Service Units and and Fire Departments responded to the scene, since it happened on the county border. Emergency personnel used hydraulic tools to remove the doors of the car to free the trapped driver who was airlifted to NUMC.

: No one was injured when a heavy fire broke out at a home at the intersection of S. Front Street and Elizabeth Street on a July night. The Village of Farmingdale Fire Department stretched two hose lines and the exterior fire was quickly extinguished. Due to the home's close proximity to the , fire vehicles  parked on the tracks and Ronkonkoma trains were held until the fire was controlled, causing delays.
