Car Catches Fire on Farmingdale LIRR Tracks

Delays on the Ronkonkoma line through night on Friday.

No one was injuried but late Friday trains on the Ronkonkoma line experienced delays after a car set on fire on the Farmingdale tracks, officials said.

At around 11:45 p.m. Friday night, , Nassau County Police and the MTA Police responded to a a car that had driven onto the LIRR tracks at a Farmingdale LIRR crossing that caught fire after making contact with the third rail. 

All passengers got out of the car safely and firefighters extinguished the fire after the tracks were de-energized, fire officials said.

Eastbound trains from Penn Station were held in Hicksville while the situation was handled and there were residual delays on the line throughout the night.
