Cheat Sheet: Village of Farmingdale 2012 Election

All you need to know before voting today.

Voters are voting for a new mayor and two trustee positions in Tuesday's Village of Farmingdale election.

The election takes place from noon to 9 p.m. at  Current Village Mayor George Starkie announced he would not seek re-election back in January, citing a need to focus on his family and his business, .

Starkie was a village trustee for two years before being elected mayor in 2008. During his tenure, he has worked aggressively on , ,  and helped oversee cleanups after  and .

Candidates for Mayor

Ralph Ekstrand

  • Party: Farmingdale 2035 Party
  • Background: Four-year trustee Ekstrand, a part-owner and pharmacist at  on Main Street for the past 31 years, has served on boards for various institutions, such as the Eagle Scout Review Board, the , the Rotary Club and the .

Georgiana Sena

  • Background: Sena has been involved with local civic, charitable and political organizations for more than 20 years.  Sena has worked in law and management services, is involved with the Kiwanis Club of Farmingdale and Long Island Cares and is the editor of Eye on the Village, a Farmingdale watchdog publication.

Trustee Candidates 

William Barrett

  • Party: Farmingdale 2035 Party
  • Background: Barrett has been a trustee for four years, has an MBA, volunteered as a youth soccer and baseball coach in the Farmingdale community and is currently a member of the Farmingdale School District’s audit committee.

Michael Manchin

  • Party: Village Independent Party
  • Background: He's a retired Nassau County police supervisor and U.S. Army veteran with experience in business and banking.

Susan Miles

  • Party: Village Independent Party
  • Background: Miles is a third generation Village resident with international business expertise and three children in the 

Thomas Ryan

  • Party: Farmingdale 2035
  • Background: Ryan is the CEO of the Farmingdale healthcare company Homecare Concepts Inc. and was named "Homecare Champion" in 2011 from the American Association for Homecare. He's also a past member of the  and is currently a board member of St. Joseph's Hospital on the Finance Committee and Quality Committee.
