Construction Slated for Pinelawn Road

The first stage of the project will be in East Farmingdale.

An East Farmingdale thoroughfare will be reconstructed in 2012 to ease traffic and increase safety, said Suffolk County Legis. Lou D’Amaro, D- North Babylon.

Pinelawn Road, which runs from Lindenhurst up to Huntington, is one of the most heavily traveled roads between the towns of Babylon and Huntington, according to the legislator. The project was approved at the Suffolk County Legislature's Dec. 20 meeting and will be funded 80 percent by federal funds and 20 percent by the county’s Capital Program meant for infrastructure projects like this.

“These areas of Pinelawn Road are well-known bottleneck points during rush hour," D'Amaro said. “This project will go a long way toward relieving that congestion and increasing traffic flow at these critical junctures of the roadway.”

The project consists of multiple phases impacting different sections of the road and requires adjacent land acquisitions. The first phase will realign the existing offset intersection at Conklin Avenue/Long Island Avenue at its intersection with Pinelawn Road in East Farmingdale. The next phase will be the reconstruction of the road from the Ruland Road/Colonial Springs Road intersection to the vicinity of Corporate Center Drive in Melville. The last phase calls for the widening of the side streets adjacent to the Ruland Road/Colonial Springs Road intersection between Baylis Road east to Little East Neck Road.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works will soon issue Requests for Proposals (RFP’s) to prospective bidders. Once the lowest responsible bidder has been selected, construction can begin.

"The reconstruction contemplated by this project will make the corridor safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians," said D’Amaro, whose legislative district encompasses portions of both towns.  ”With everything in place, I look forward to the much anticipated commencement of this vital project during the coming year.”
