Crime Report: Church Vandalized, Graveside Thefts

Arrests

  • Steven Yurcak, 19, and Jake Matthews, 18, both of Lindenhurst, were arrested on Dec. 31 and charged with criminal mischief in the second degree for vandalizing the Farmingdale First Baptist Church at 51 East Street in North Amityville.
  • Ricardo Cordova, 39 of Farmingdale, was arrested on Brookside Avenue in Wantagh on Dec. 24 and charged with driving while intoxicated and four vehicle and traffic law violations.
  • John McCallum, of Westbury, was arrested in East Farmingdale on Dec. 22 and charged with petit larceny. 
  • Destiny Oliver, of Bakersfield, was arrested in Farmingdale on Dec. 21 and charged with prostitution.
  • Shavard Calloway, of Brightwaters, was arrested in Farmingdale on Dec. 21 and charged with promoting prostitution for posting ads and purchasing hotel rooms.                                   

Incidents

  • On Dec. 31, two Lindenhurst men were arrested and charged with vandalizing the Farmingdale First Baptist Church on East Street in North Amityville. Police said Steven Yurcak, 19, and Jake Matthews, 18, spray-painted the exterior of a building that houses the church. The arrests were made after a caller reported two men spray painting an exterior wall at the church's location at approximately 12:50 p.m. on New Year's Eve. First Precinct officers James Knoblach and Eric Dennis responded to the call and said the suspects tagged the words “SOP” and "Shake” on the side of the building before fleeing on foot. Yurcak and Matthews were later picked up by Suffolk Police and charged with criminal mischief in the second degree. After a follow-up investigation by the Graffiti Task Force, they were charged with one count of criminal mischief in the third degree and three counts of making graffiti, police said.
  • On Dec. 24, police responded to an altercation between patrons at pub located on Melville Road.
