Crossing Signals Installed on Conklin

Residents and legislators hope the new signals will improve pedestrian safety.

The Department of Transportation has installed rapid flashing beacons for pedestrians crossing on Conklin and Elizabeth/Cherry Streets in the Village of Farmingdale.

“There was a great need for a safe crossing measure at these intersections, especially with the high pedestrian volume associated with , school activities, and residents passing to and from the Village apartments and train station,” said Sen. Kemp Hannon, R-Garden City. "I thank the New York State Department of Transportation for their special attention to this matter."

Monsignor Michael Flynn, pastor of Saint Kilian Church, and other members of the community have requested this installation for years, Hannon said, since the scene has been the site of accidents in the past.

The pedestrian crossing button must be pressed in order to activate the rapid flashing beacons. Nassau County Legislator Joseph Belesi, R-Farmingdale, encourages pedestrians to activate the beacons prior to crossing the street.

"Everyone should take advantage of this important safety feature,” said Belesi. “I want to thank Mayor George Starkie, Senator Kemp Hannon and Monsignor Michael Flynn, Pastor of Saint Kilian Church, for their collaborative effort to make this possible."

Rapid flash beacons enhance safety by reducing crashes between vehicles and pedestrians at intersections without signals and mid-block pedestrian crossings by increasing driver awareness of potential pedestrian conflicts, according to the Department of Transporation.

The beacons were funded through the New York State Department of Transportation budget.
