The proceeds will go to a non-profit dedicated to helping Sept. 11 families.

Farmingdale Baseball League is hosting its 1st Annual Sept. 11th Memorial Baseball Tournament to benefit the Tuesday's Children foundation this summer.

Tuesday’s Children is a non-profit family service organization that benefits individuals impacted by the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and more recently those who have been impacted by terrorist incidents worldwide.

"We had been tossing this idea around all year and finally said let's put it together," said Joann Vazquez, president of Farmingdale Baseball League. "We have a lot of firefighter and police department members who volunteer for us. We were a little leery if we could get enough teams, but we decided to go ahead for a good cause."

There are 22 teams enrolled in the tournament divided into U8, U9 and U10 divisions. Games are running from July 22 to Aug. 13

The tournament fee was $600 per team, which includes five games plus playoffs, umpires and baseballs, a skills competition and home run derby and awards. Each team gets at minimum one weeknight game and one weekend game.

Teams playing in addition to Farmingdale are from East Meadow, Plainedge, Island Trees, Bethpage, Long Beach, Levittown, Mattituck and island-wide teams.

All profits above the cost of running the tournament will be donated to Tuesday's Children. Vasquez said that charity was a suggestion from one of the police officers who volunteers for the league.
