Farmingdale Teachers Honored for Volunteer Efforts

honored two Farmingdale teachers this week for collecting more than 5,000 food items and raising money to alleviate hunger in Nassau County this school year.

Jane Walsh and Lauren Castellan, who teach at were named Citizens Bank Citizens of the Week for their work with the rock CAN roll, a nonprofit, hunger-relief organization that partners with rock concerts, schools, corporations and private individuals to collect and distribute nutritious food to those living with hunger and in poverty.

The teachers organized food drives and fundraising events with assistance from their students. During the 2010-11 school year they delivered more than 5,000 food items to organizations within five miles of the school. They also created and directed a dance-a-thon routine for 100 eighth-grade students that raised more than $8,500 for local food agencies.

"They’ve been relentless in their fight against hunger and their success demonstrates how we can beat hunger,"  said rock CAN roll President Aimee Hamilton.

The Citizens Bank Citizen of the Week recognizes the work of volunteers who have performed outstanding community service on behalf of nonprofit organizations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.
