Farmingdale Campaign Signs Vandalized

Signs from the Pearson campaign have been damaged over recent weeks.

Vandals have struck campaign signs in Farmingdale belonging to , a Democrat running for the 14th district seat of the Nassau County Legislature.

According to Pearson's campaign, up to 30 signs were vandalized on Hempstead Turnpike before Merritts Road, on Quaker Meeting House Road and on Manhetto Hill Road. Each sign was methodically destroyed by cutting the name out of the sign.

"We tried to replace as many as we could over the past week," Pearson said, adding that the number of signs damaged seems to be "constantly increasing" with some signs having to be replaced twice. She estimates the signs cost between $50 and $60 each, equating to a loss of nearly $2,000, plus the man hours of replacing them.

Legis. Judy Jacobs, an eight-term lawmaker in the 15th district of the Legislature, also had signs vandalized. Jacobs, D-Woodbury, referred to the vandalism in the Plainview area as “costly craziness” and she filed a complaint with the Nassau County Police Department.

Pearson did not file a complaint with the police because most of the signs damaged were located on public property.

Pearson said she does not have any information about who is damaging the signs.

"However, I find it peculiar that it only seems to be happening to signs of Democrats," she said. "The signs with names cut out have been immediately next to Republican nominees, whose signs go completely unscathed."

Pearson's opponent, longtime Legislator R-Farmingdale, condemned the vandalism at a recent Plainview debate, saying anyone who committed such acts would be fired from his campaign.

"It's not just about replacing the signs, it is also about being considerate of the community," Pearson said. "The damaged signs are eyesores."
