Local Vets Honored with B-29 Tribute

The last operational B-29 in the world will land at Republic Airport Thursday.

World War II veterans will gather on Thursday, May 26 at 11 a.m. to welcome the arrival of the last operational B-29 in the world when it lands at the American Airpower Museum at in Farmingdale.

The tribute flight is sponsored by Bristal Assisted Living.

Among those attending will be Sal Citrano, 85 years old, of Farmingdale, who was a Navy radioman; John Valentine, 86, formerly of Plainview, who was a naval radioman onboard a torpedo bomber; John Rienzo, 94, a former resident of Glendale, who served in the South Pacific where he manned an amphibious tank; Edward J. Borowski, 88, of Hauppauge, who served on the old battlewagon, USS Texas where he supervised 25 men who loaded Ammo and John Stubel,93, from Garden City, who was a crew chief for a mobile repair unit for the B-29's.

The B-29, a B-17 Flying Fortress and others will be over Jones Beach in the Bethpage Air Show this Memorial Day weekend. The bombers are available for flight experiences and ground tours at the American Airpower Museum from Friday, May 27 through Monday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission will be $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and veterans and $5 for children.
