New Farmingdale Math Program Moving Forward

The Farmingdale School District is integrating a new program into its is mathematics curriculum focused on understanding and retaining basic concepts.

The program, Math in Focus, is being implemented this school year. The district's teachers and administrators are building on a pilot program begun in 2009-2010 at Northside Elementary School. The district then fully implemented the program in kindergarten through second grade in 2011.

"The program is designed to help students truly understand and retain the concepts behind math problems, rather than simply memorizing information,” said Farmingdale's Superintendent John Lorentz. "We are pleased with the progress to this point. 

Lorenze said students can spend more time on topics and focus on the material they’re learning. The better critical thinking and problem solving skills.”

The district is preparing information sessions and online tutorials to help educate parents on the programs.

Math in Focus is a math curricula program that has been adopted in school districts across the United States over the past several years. The program is unique in its approach to understanding concepts and pace-of-learning, by focusing on hands-on activities, group discussions, and critical thinking aspects.

The Farmingdale School District is inviting the community to attend its next Board of Education meeting, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. in the Howitt Middle School cafeteria.
