Photos: Home Base at the Air Show

A look at the Bethpage Air Show weekend events from its launching grounds in Farmingdale.

Thousands of Long Islanders watched as history flew over the south shore in the 8th Annual Bethpage Air Show this past weekend.

Farmingdale served as home base for historic planes like the only flying B-29 Superfortress in the world and performing pilots like the Iron Eagles aerobatic team and GEICO skytypers.

It was a weekend of remembrance and celebration. A Saturday night gala at the included various elected officials like Rep. Peter King, NY State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone and others. They all participated in a reading of a 1940's radio script to honor veterans lost, as well as those on active duty this Memorial Day Weekend.

World War II  "Rosie the Riveter," West Babylon resident Josephine Rachiele and other veterans were on hand, in addition to re-enactors like Farmingdale resident Julia Lauria Blum.

Pilots gave tours throughout the weekend of the unique planes, like the F-18 fighter jet and  A-10 Thunderbolt.
