Plane Makes Emergency Landing

The charter plane landed safely at Farmingdale's Republic Airport.

A charter plane landed safely at in Farmingdale this afternoon after declaring an in-flight emergency, airport officials said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Ameristar DC-9 plane was experiencing a low pressurization problem in the cabin. The pilot diverted to Republic Airport and landed without incident on runway 9-1 at 1:30 p.m.

The plane was carrying no passengers.

Cabin pressurization is the active pumping of compressed air into an aircraft cabin when flying at altitude to maintain a safe environment given the low outside atmospheric pressure. Passengers risk of hypoxia, altitude sickness, decompression sickness and barotraum when pressurization drops.

Information about the plane's original flight plan was unavailable since the plane is owned by a private charter service.
