Resident Wins Eating Contest

Mike Hoffman ate 1.8 pounds of pickles at Carnegie Deli.

Mike Hoffman, who hails from Farmingdale and is nicknamed “The Skinny," won the semi-annual pickle-eating contest at Carnegie Deli Wednesday.

Hoffman ate 20 pickles in just five minutes, taking home a trophy and “the pleasure,” he put it. Apparently the 1.8 lbs. of pickles weren't enough for him - he ate a pastrami sandwich after.

“In five minutes I got them down,” Hoffman told 1010 WINS. “It was a very delicious five minutes, I can tell you that."

Hoffman has entered the contest three times prior to winning Wednesday. He didn't beat record-holder Curtis Silwa's number, who ate 3.8 lbs of pickles years back.

Carnegie Deli is located on 7th Avenue in New York City. The contest takes place on the sidewalk outside the legendary eatery.

"The pickle contest is a fun event to make people aware of pickles and what pickles mean to a deli," Carnegie Deli owner Sandy Levine said. "It's a fun-loving food that makes people happy."
