School Notebook: Field Trip, Yearbook Sales

First graders at SEM went on a field trip to White Post Farms in Melville.  The children went on a hay ride, picked pumpkins, fed animals, and enjoyed an outdoor lunch. Browse the photo gallery for scenes from the day.

Students at SEM celebrated the last day of “Fire Prevention Week” on Oct. 21, with a visit from the . The firefighters talked to students about fire safety and proper procedures for home fire safety. The students got a hands-on experience while they examined the safety equipment and tools. The students also received plastic firemen helmets, coloring books and fire safety information to take home.

On Nov. 1 and 2 students at Albany Avenue are participating in Treats for the Troops, where they are encouraged to donate their leftover Halloween candy to the American troops fighting overseas   

The Albany Avenue Elementary School’s Student Council will hold its "Meet the Candidates" assembly on Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. Student Council is made up of 30 students from fourth and fifth grade. There are three kids voted into Student Council from each homeroom. The assembly will be an opportunity for the eight students who are running for office to give speeches as to why their peers should vote for them. There are two fifth graders running for president, two fifth graders running for vice president, two fourth graders running for secretary and two fourth graders running for treasurer. This assembly program is a culmination of weeks of campaigning and allows the fourth and fifth graders to exercise their right to vote. Each student will get an "official ballot" to cast their vote and experience the democratic process just as their parents will do on Election Day.

Howitt Middle School is collecting costumes for Camp Adventure, the only summer camp for kids battling pediatric cancer on Long Island. The costumes will be for the campers to have a Halloween party at camp. Students can drop off costumes in the Main Office or in their homeroom up until Friday, Nov. 4. Eighth graders will be around that day during homeroom to collect.

The next sports season begins on Nov. 7. The school physician will be available at Howitt on Nov. 3 to do physicals if needed. Students can check with the nurse to find out if they need one.

Yearbooks can be preordered online here or students can bring $50 cash or check to room 308 during homeroom. Eighth grade students can also order their Class of 2012 t-Shirts by bringing in their order form along with $10 cash or check made out to Howitt PTA to the Main Office.

The PTA is sponsoring Reflections 2011 with the theme of "Diversity means . . ."
Flyers with complete details are available in the Main Office. Entries are due Friday, Nov. 4. All students are encouraged to participate. Complete details and rules can be obtained here.

Yearbooks are on sale Nov. 1 - Nov. 4 in the Commons, periods 4 - 8, The cost is $120, cash or check made payable to Hi Life.
