TOBAY Hosts Emergency Preparedness Seminar

The program will inform residents on how to best respond during the aftermath of a hurricane, blizzard, nor'easter or other emergency event.

The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Public Safety is conducting a Weather Preparedness and Emergency Management Seminar tonight at 7 p.m. at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center, located at 510 Grumman Road West in Bethpage.

The program will be conducted by leaders in the fields of meteorology and emergency management, headed by Leonard B. Symons, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety and a weather expert, who has trained at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.

The program will inform residents on how to best respond during the aftermath of a hurricane, blizzard, nor’easter or other emergency event. There will also be an overview of the SWIFTREACH 911 Emergency Notification System and the event will include a unique and rare tour of the Morrelly Center and its operations.

The building is the first and only privately owned homeland security facility in the nation that serves emergency first responders (fire, police, transportation, etc.) and other security services. The building also supports companies on the leading edge of homeland security technology development and academia resources.

“Recent dramatic events around the world have further underscored the importance of readying ourselves on Long Island, where we are geographically vulnerable for the effects of weather and flooding. Complacency is not an option,” Supervisor Venditto said. “This seminar is an important way to learn from the experts what you need to know to ensure that you and your family will be prepared should a hurricane, blizzard, nor’easter or other type of disaster finds its way to Long Island.”
