Valentine's Day: Unique Gift at Airpower Museum

The museum is offering World War II flight experiences.

Some show their love on Valentine's Day through cards, flowers, candy or a nice meal out. This year, the is offering a unique alternative that they think flies above the rest.

The museum is selling World War II flight experiences on its Waco Biplane, C-47 and AT-6 Texan jets. The flight experiences come standard with the purchase of the different levels of museum membership, so the gift also includes other membership perks for the rest of the year.

"We've been offering flights since we started but this is the first year we're suggesting them as a gift to give to your valentine," said Larry Starr, assistant manager of the museum.

Additionally, flight experience purchasers are asked to come to the museum on Feb. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. dressed in WWII period dress to be photographed recreating the famous Times Square kiss for photographers.

The "Aviation Cadet" membership is $275 and includes an open cockpit flight in the AAM Waco Biplane for when outdoor temperatures get above 60 degress. The "Bomber Commander" membership is $320 and includes a D-Day 101st Airbourne C-47 flight for when outdoor temperatures get above 50 degrees. The "Flight Commander" membership is $330 and includes an AT-6 Texan flight on either Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend.

"We hope to see people participate in this, there will be a rose for every couple that comes and it should be an enjoyable experience," Starr said.

Vintage romance continues on Valentine's Day at 11 a.m. at the museum, where Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray will hold wedding renewals for veterans of WWII, Vietnam, Korea, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq. According to her office, Supervisor Murray will "tell romantic stories of how veterans fell in love just before, during or after their tours of duty."
