A new look for downtown Farmingdale.

The Village of Farmingdale Board of Trustees approved a law Monday night that will allow residential units to be built over stores on Main Street, a decision the board believes is key to local revitalization.

Local Law 5 legalizes the construction of mixed used buildings in downtown Farmingdale, which were legal more than 50 years ago. Any new construction can now reach as high as 45 feet, about three and a half units.

Before the Board of Trustees voted to approve the amended law, there were public hearings at both the October and November meetings where some residents voiced their concerns about illegal apartments, parking and other issues.

Mayor Starkie and the board addressed the concerns with parking requirements and other compromises.

Finally - a town that is thinking of the young college graduates and their need for an affordable place to live ON LONG ISLAND. Hopefully, this will keep this group of educated young adults here, able to live independently, for (hopefully) an affordable rental cost. The change in law within the village of Farmingdale will help reduce the 'brain drain' here on Long Island and keep our college graduates here - to work and to live - but be able to stay near their families. Well done, Farmingdale Village !!!

Let's hope it gets more tenants to lease all these empty buildings! While there will likely be more traffic in town I think it is a good idea to inject some life into Main Street.
