VIDEO: Farmingdale State Evacuation Center Ready

The center has the capacity to hold 3,000 evacuees.

Around one dozen evacuees had checked into the at Farmingdale State College as of early Saturday afternoon.

Red Cross volunteers assembled 250 cots Friday night in the gym and are prepared to serve thousands. There are more than 3,000 meals and 11,000 water bottles ready for residents, according to shelter manager Kelly Pontrello.

An emergency generator is also set-up should the area lose power.

"The emergency generator is in place and operational, and Red Cross personnel are anticipating occupants shortly as evacuation of the barrier islands has now become mandatory," said John Dzinanka
director of the physical plant at Farmingdale State. "All our emergency equipment has been fueled and tested. We’re about as ready as we can be."
