'Modest' Turnout at the Polls [VIDEO]

TOBAY voters say high taxes are the main concern this election.

The first half of Election Day has been slow but smooth, according to coordinators at the polling site.

"The turnout has been low to modest," said coordinator Patrick S. Lee at around 1:30 p.m. "I'd say fairly average overall."

The number of residents who voted by midday wasn't available since the site won't be calculating the total numbers of voters at the location until the end of the night, Lee added. He said he expects a surge in voters after 5 p.m.

Lee and fellow coordinator Jim Sabellico reported that there have not been any technical issues or confusion among voters about the new voting machines.

"More are confused about what district they are in," Sabellico said. Farmingdale since it sits on the border of Nassau and Suffolk County and the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of Babylon.

Sabellico said it has mostly been seniors voting during the day, but that younger residents will probably come out in higher numbers after the workday.

"It sounds like people are fed up," Lee said about the sentiment of residents who have come out to vote. "Many people seem to be at a tipping point."

Farmingdale residents Jason Wass and Thomas Orlando both said high taxes were a main reason for voting today at the Howitt polling site.

"Taxes are the biggest thing right now," Wass said.
