Village Board Extends Conklin Street Zoning Discussion

The board will not vote on permitted uses until the February meeting.

The will continue discussing the allowed uses in a Conklin Street zoning district at their February meeting.

The board resolved on Tuesday night that they will discuss uses at a work session in two weeks and continue the discussion at a public hearing at the Feb. 6 meeting. The district in question is located in the area after Hempstead Turnpike and before Main Street adjacent to Fulton Street.

This fall, in leasing the former Chase bank property in the Conklin Street district and turning it into a restaurant. The family-owned restaurant group runs Tellers Chophouse and Verace in Islip, the Beachtree Cafe in East Islip, H2O Seafood Grill in Smithtown and Prime in Huntington and is known for its five-star ratings.

"Having restaurants where they aren't needed brings a variety of problems including noise and garbage pollution, not to mention rodents, potential chronic smells as well as drunk and disorderly conduct right in our own backyards," said resident Cristine Defelice.

In the February vote, trustees will outline what the permitted uses in this district will be. had expressed interest in expanding in that district, but has since backed out.
