Village Board to Discuss 3 New Controversial Laws

Members of the Farmingdale Village Board discussed three upcoming controversial votes and public hearings during Monday night's work session. 

Monday's meeting is open to the public at 8 p.m. at Village Hall.

The skateboard code, which was introduced due to safety concerns from the board and residents, would forbid the use of skateboarding on Fairview Road and Yoakum Street.

If passed, those convicted will have to pay a minimum of $100 for each offense.

The vote was scheduled to take place on Nov. 5 but was postponed due to research that could not be completed due to Hurricane Sandy.

Board members have had meetings with both skateboarders and concerned residents to find a solution to the matter since October.

"We want to resolve this issue in a way that everybody can still skateboard down the hill and we think that it is safe enough for the residents," said Mayor Ralph Ekstrand during the Oct. 15 meeting.

A sex offender code which would disallow sex offenders registered with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services to live or loiter near locations where children are known to congregate among other provisions, was also discussed. 

Ekstrand said he is in favor or passing the law.

"I don't like sex offenders living in our village," he said.

A law to ban massage parlors in the village in an effort to combat illegal, unlicensed activity as well as a code on sidewalk obstruction will be open for public comment during the meeting.
