What is the Brain Drain?

  • The Brain Drain is a term used to describe the departure of more than 40,000 college educated Long Island residents ages 25-34 who have left over the last decade.

Are residents concerned about it?

  • A 2011 Long Island Index survey found that 75 percent of Long Island residents say young people leaving is a “serious problem,” compared to only 44 percent of suburban New Jersey residents and 48 percent of suburban Connecticut residents.
