What is the Brain Drain?

• The Brain Drain is a term used to describe the departure of more than 40,000 college educated Long Island residents ages 25-34 who have left over the last decade.

Are residents concerned about it?

• A 2011 Long Island Index survey found that 75 percent of Long Island residents say young people leaving is a “serious problem,” compared to only 44 percent of suburban New Jersey residents and 48 percent of suburban Connecticut residents.

Is it happening in Farmingdale?

• Since 1990, the percentage of Farmingdale residents ages 20-34 has dropped 14 percent, according to a report commissioned by the Village of Farmingdale last year.
