It was an unusual, but not unprecedented sight over Republic Airport Monday.
Patch readers noticed a Delta commercial jet making its final approach to Republic Airport Monday morning and captured the attached photo of the plane.
The reader wondered if this was an emergency landing.
It wasn't: The flight was a charter booked by the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL on their final descent to play the Islanders Monday afternoon at The Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, an airport spokesman said.
The Flyers went on to crush the Islanders, 7-0, Monday afternoon.
Republic is routinely used by some teams and others as a charter flight destination. The runway can easily handle the big jets.
In fact, horses being flown in for big horse races, such as the Belmont Stakes each June, also use the Republic runway to deliver thoroughbreds to the New York area.
