Patch Picks: Five Books for All Ages

Tune in each Thursday at 3 p.m. to see our picks on different topics.

Each week we highlight editor and reader of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off and more.  In honor of National Read Across America Week we are highlighting some bestsellers librarian Krista Lucarelli from the recommends for kids and adults.

  • My People by Langston Hughes (photographs by Charles R. Smith Jr.): This is a collection of Hughes' poems with beautiful sepia pictures.
  • Matilda by Roald Dal: This is a classic book about a little girl who is extremely bright but does not get the attention she deserves.
  • Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen: This is the story of a veterinary student who abandons his studies to travel with a circus as their vet. (Read this one before it becomes a movie this Spring!)
  • True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters by Elisabeth Robinson: This is a collection of letters between sisters, through their ups and downs.
  • Henry's List of Wrongs by John Scott Shepard: This is an entertaining take on a corporate shark seeking redemption.

All of these books can be taken out of the Farmingdale Public Library. "They can't seem to stay on the shelves," Lucarelli said.
