FREE ANTIGONE IN FOUR BOROUGHS JULY 23 TO AUGUST 13, 2011

Xoregos Performing Company presents Sophocles' stunning drama, ANTIGONE for thirteen free performances in parks and libraries in four boroughs this summer.

The company continues its tradition of Greek classical productions with this drama of the fate of Œdipus' four children, Polynices, Eteocles, Ismene and Antigone. When Antigone flouts Creon's law, is it rebellion or heroism? Should an individual's beliefs supersede a King's edict? Reminiscent of many current events as well as WW II, this exciting exploration of personal courage rings true today as it did when it was written ca 442 B.C.

The production is directed and choreographed by Shela Xoregos, with an explosive, fascinating mix of traditional and modern elements. Elegant costumes are by Regina Cate, known for her innovative designs for San Francisco's Magic Theater. Costume capes for the production form the set in varying shapes and collages. Composer Edward RosenBerg III sets Choral Odes to classical music and sounds the actors make in various ways. The classically trained cast members have performed in many New York productions of plays by Shakespeare, Euripides, Chekhov and others. They are: Amy Bohaker, Andrew R. Cooksey, Bong Dizon, Michael Lawrence Eisenstein, David Allen Green, Katherine Mylenki, Reagan Porter, Amanda Elizabeth Sawyer and 6 year old Brennan-Pierson Wang.

The 13 performances include Jefferson Market Library, Central Park and the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater, Manhattan; Queens Library at Flushing; Queens, Mt. Prospect Park in Brooklyn and the Bronx Library Center in the Bronx. All performances are free to the public and are sixty-five minutes long. For the outdoor locations you are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic. The schedule follows. ANTIGONE starts on time.
