Photos: Local History at Powell Cemetery
This week's Viewfinder explores the Farmingdale landmark.
History says that Thomas Powell is Farmingdale's first setter. He arrived in 1687 and fostered the ongoing expansion and growth, which was made possible by the construction of the Long Island Rail Road. Over time, the area that the Powell Family inhabited for more than century would eventually evolve into the community known today as Farmingdale, according to the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society.
Many members of Powell family were laid to rest near the Meeting House in a cemetery still known as "Powell Cemetery." The cemetery grounds, although hard to notice from the main road, continue to remain well-maintained in order to preserve and honor the group of individuals who helped create the community.Â
