Dalers to Open Football Season on Strange Terrain

Plainview JFK's turf field isn't ready; game moved to middle school field.

Thursday's Daler's football opener will be played against a familiar foe but on a field the current team has never played on.

Plainview JFK's new turf athletic field won't be ready to play on for a few weeks.

Plainview officials said Thursday's game will be moved the grass football field at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School. That game in scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday. The field is at the corner of Ruby Lane and Southern Parkway in Plainview.

For about 30 years, until 1990, that field was the home of the Plainview Gulls, the occupants of the adjacent Plainview-Old Bethpage High School. At the time, Plainview had two high schools, Plainview and Kennedy, which were merged in 1991. The old high school now serves as one of Plainview's middle schools.

School officials and Plainview JFK football boosters said the new artificial turf has arrived and LIPA has made progress on installing a transformer needed to power the lighting system. The company installing the new field said they are hopeful it will be ready by Sept. 20.

The Town of Oyster Bay has funded the vast majority of the project at Plainview JFK High School.
