Update: Farmingdale Lowe's Open Despite Shakeup

Farmingdale location remains open despite nationwide pullback by home improvement retailer.

There’s been a shakeup at retail home improvement giant , and it’s being felt from upstate Batavia to nearby Huntington Station. Yet the future of its Farmingdale location is still unclear.

The retailer announced the closing of 20 underperforming stores nationwide, including Batavia. Lowe’s also .

While Farmingdale was not on the hit list of underperforming stores, the store manager was not permitted to comment on the status of the store.

"We have made no announcement about our Farmingdale store," said company spokeswoman Stacey Lentz, adding that the announcement to close pertained only to those listed. She also said that it is Lowe's policy not to comment on the current sales performance of each store.

The company had planned a 103,000-square-foot home-improvement store and a 26,500-square foot garden center for the vast site formerly occupied by the iconic , which closed in 2007.

"We are no longer pursuing building a store on the site," Lentz said Tuesday evening. "As you know, we announced a few weeks ago that we are going to open fewer stores. We’ve completed some environmental cleanup, some retaining walls, etc."

The Huntington Station store would have been Lowe's 66th in the state. The company had said it expected to create about 125 jobs with the new site.

Lentz, who said the Town of Huntington had been notified, said the property would go up for sale.
