Healthy Chinese Food at Wing Hing Kitchen

Farmingdale's Wing Hing breaks the greasy Chinese food stereotype.

is one of Farmingdale’s most popular Chinese take-out restaurants, thanks to its convenient location on Merritts Rd., reasonable prices and speedy service.

The menu uniquely features a Weight Watchers approved category of diet specials, along with your typical array of greasy favorites like lo mein, beef and broccoli and fried dumplings. The healthy options all have no cholesterol, no salt and are low in calories. Can Chinese food be healthy and delicious? We found out.

The Dish: Steamed Chicken and Broccoli ($5.50). Sure the pale, nearly white in color steamed chicken mixed with what looks like bland, unsatisfying broccoli may not be love at first sight, but looks deceive in this case.

In addition to steamed chicken, Wing Hing offers steamed triple jade, shrimp and mixed vegetables on the diet menu.

How’s It Taste: The chicken was actually not dry, like its color would seemingly indicate, but very moist, especially once dipped in the brown sauce that accompanies the dish. The sauce was thin and not salty like soy sauce, with a gravy-like consistency that coated the chicken well. The sauce was great in taste but not in packaging - it was served in a small white carton, like most Chinese take-out comes in, and was prone to messy leakage. The broccoli was fresh and cooked well and the dish was very filling, without being high in calories.

Sides: Wonton soup ($1.70), Brown Rice ($1.50) and a Roast Pork Egg Roll ($1.10) all make for good sides to this dish. The soup was served steaming hot and the small pint size was packed with 6 wontons, perfect for the cold days we've been having in Farmingdale. The brown rice is obviously the healthy choice for a side, but it was undercooked and brittle, needing packets of soy sauce for flavor. The roast pork egg roll makes this meal no longer Weight Watchers-friendly, but the staple take-out choice was ideal - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside with a good combination of meat and vegetables within.
