MD to Receive High Honor at Bethpage State Park

Dr. David J. Chalif will be receiving the Robert Bernstein Humanitarian award.

David J. Chalif, MD, chief of neurovascular neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset is being honored for his work at Bethpage State Park on Oct. 28.

Dr. Chalif, who also plays the role of Co-Director of the NSUH Brain Aneurysm Center at NSUH, was selected by the Voices Against Brain Cancer Foundation (VABC) to receive the 2012 Robert Bernstein Humanitarian award during the second annual "5K Run/Walk in Memory of Dr. Bernstein".

VABC aims towards raising awareness and funds to advance scientific research to find a cure for brain cancer.

This year the event will be in tribute to the late Robert Bernstein, MD, an Ob-Gyn at NSUH who suffered from a malignant brain tumor and passed away from glioblastoma in 2010 this year.

Dr. Bernstein's wife, Roz Bernstein, a board member of the foundation, said she is dedicated to finding a cure.

“What separated Rob from everyone else was his innate ability to truly listen and help those in need. This trait is what made him not only a first-class physician, but the greatest husband, father, grandfather and friend. It is now the goal of my children and I, along with the VABC family, to make a difference by continuing to fund cutting-edge research needed to give hope to those patients who are diagnosed with brain cancer," she said in a press release.

Mario Lichtenstein, who founded VABC in 2003, said he hopes to raise funds for future brain cancer research.

"We've lost great minds to brain cancer. VABC urges the community to help us find a cure today by participating in the 'Run/Walk in Memory of Dr. Robert Bernstein," he said.

Registration begins on Oct. 28 at 9 a.m. The run/walk starts at 9:45 a.m. To register, adults are $25, children are $15. The event will also have family actives, raffles and entertainment.
