State Farm McLears: In Farmingdale for More Than 50 Years

Three generations of McLear's have worked at the Farmingdale-based company.

Bill McLear is a local State Farm agent that learned a lot from a father who spent 50 years himself selling life insurance in Farmingdale.

Bill's father, also Bill, was an agent for more than 50 years and Bill Jr. is approaching 20 years in service. At one point, his three children also worked with him at the 54 Motor Ave. location.

"A lot of customers remember when my grandfather knocked on their doors 50 years ago," Jessica McLear said. "So we’ve been here for a while."

Jessica, who lives in Farmingdale, said that a big reason business is still doing well is the mobile aspect of the company. She herself has recently met clients in Smithtown and Jericho.

"A lot of times, customers need the convenience of an agent going to them," she said. "We’re very flexible with that."

State Farm offers car loans, credit cards and Life Insurance. McLear said it's fun to be working with her brother and father everyday, even though she and her brother "occasionally rub shoulders."

"We’ve always been very close as a family," she said.

McLear added that a lot of the values instilled in her family came from her grandfather. A lot of customers are known on a first-name basis and even have her cell phone number so they can reach her anytime.

"I want people to know we’re here to build a personal relationship," she said. "They can get someone on the phone any time of day. You’re going to get the same service my grandfather gave to his customers 50 years ago."
