What Do You Think of the New Patch?

A completely new design is being tested on five Nassau County Patch sites.

On Sunday night, Patch launched a redesigned platform on five of its sites in BellmoreGarden CityLevittownLong Beach and Merrick.

The biggest change is the addition of "groups" — topic-specific news feeds that let Patch users choose the updates they receive on the customizable homepage. Groups now organize all news, content and information on the new site. By following or unfollowing different groups, users can make the daily experience of taking in the news more relevant to their everyday lives. Click here to see the new groups feature in action in a video tour of the new site.

The major groups, like Breaking News, Schools, etc. — will be run by Patch editors — but users are also encouraged to start groups of their own. Members of a group can post their own stories, photos, events or just talk about news happening in the community. All in all, the new site fosters a more collaborative community atmosphere that fits the way each town works from day to day.

By design, Patch users outside of the five test towns cannot post or create items on the test sites. This was done to prevent out-of-town content from filling up each of the sites, and to keep things locally relevant. Also, some features may change before the new platform is launched nationally.

Visit the BellmoreGarden CityLevittownLong Beach or Merrick Patch sites and let us know what you think.

Readers: We need your thoughts on the new redesign being tested on 5 L.I. sites. We would really appreciate your comments and reaction. Pros and cons welcome. Thanks. jd

The icons and illustrations make the site looks less serious. It doesn't feel like a news site. The weights and sizes of the headlines and subheadlines need some tuning. Everything kind of just blends together.

I'd rather not read member led group pages. No offense but with my limited time to catch up on local news I'd rather just read about the important happenings in my town, not personal stories. I enjoy facebook because I can catch up on the private happenings from the friends I've chosen to be in my feed. JMHO:)

where are the Blogs?

I haven't seen the redesigned sites, but truthfully, I find the Syosset edition very difficult to get around. Features seem to appear one day and disappear the next, nowhere to be found. This makes following a story and the ensuing silly comments a bit of a challenge. I really enjoy Patch.com, but I look forward to an improved design for the Syosset site.

Friends: Thank you. Please keep these comments coming. It's important to get this right for our readers. That's why your input on the test sites are so vital. Thank You... jd.

Joe is right, the new graphic design is way too simple: too much white space, cartoonish marshmallow icons, etc. It looks like it's aimed at the kiddie audience. Maybe that's the level to which infotainment has sunken. Even the top banner drawing looks severely dumbed down, too stylized.
Also, I strongly agree with Melissa, member lead groups belong on facebook, not a news site. I go to Patch for hard news, not the sewing circle jabber. I don't want family news, rumors, and self-serving blogs. How about adding icons for real news categories: local, town, county, state, national, and world news, like most other print and web news organizations. And I don't want to see calendar events mixed in with the news. I'd use the calendar tab if I wanted to see events.

PS - Alowing users to add groups "willy-nully" will be chaos,

Agreed. What's with all the cutesy stuff? If I want groups, I have Facebook; when I'm on Patch I'm looking for news. The Long Island Press' site has news without all this fol-de-rol. Take a hint from them if you want people to take you seriously.

Again, I don't know if it's part of the new design, but the "restaurant reviews" on the Syosset site are a huge waste of space, in my opinion. They would be useful if more than just Dr. Steve reviewed every restaurant. People are smart enough to decide for themselves which local restaurants they like. Same comment goes for all the "Hey, let's vote for the best ----- in Syosset" pieces.
I hope these features are not part of the redesigned sites. Also, I'd drop the "Nearby Stories" feature. If I want info about news outside Syosset, I have News 12 for that. Still, I'm a big Patch fan.

I haven't seen the new design but I'm getting a little tired of favorite resturants and crime in areas that don't concern my city of Glen Cove or the towns that are surronding us. I like to see blogs and news that concern my area only. It has really changed allot in the past 6 months that I don't really go on as much.

I agree with most of the readers, more news less fluff. Easy access to local news
Joe September 27, 2012 at 07:49 pm
I agree and I understand why Patch would want to include local restaurant reviews, but Yelp and Google are the places to go for that. Patch would be better off linking local Yelp reviews directly into the site.

Thank you, Papa Tom. We appreciate how you and our readers care about the site. That's why we're asking for your opinions. Thanks again. jd

Brad. We're working on getting more of the Glen Cove-specific news over there. Just give us a little more time. We're on it. jd

The Garden City Patch can be compared to a mountain. For the last few weeks, more and more of my friends and neighbors were getting their local news and updates from The Patch. If you graphed this, the site's usage would have a nice upward slope. However, the new site is horrible and all over the place. I know several people who have stopped going to the website, and it's usage among by friends and neighbors have gone off a cliff. It was so pleasant logging onto the Farmingdale site and seeing the old format. In addition, The Garden City Patch had been rivaling the GC News website but according to a source, GC News is pulling away once again in terms of traffic and site visits.

I jumped around to the towns with the new sites and didn't like the set up. Agree pretty much with above - too much wasted space - too cartoonish - and yes, I too log on to Patch to "quickly" see what's happening in my town. I don't want groups - anymore groups on social sites and we'll be in our own group - "SMA" Social Media Anonymous.
Patch is informative - well put-together and fun. Why are you trying to fix something that's not broken?

Mel, Michael, Helen: Thank you for you comments. We're passing these along. They are appreciated.

I agree with Papa Tom's earlier post about it being difficult to follow up on a story. You see the story one day and then it seems to disappear.
P.J. September 28, 2012 at 11:13 am
Thumbs down. Sorry if this comes across as harsh, but I don't understand why you -- the Patch folks -- would work so hard to make Patch a legitimate news outlet across most of Long Island only to then essentially rebrand your product with a blog format that's unprofessional in appearance and ineffective at getting the NEWS across to readers. Please don't fall into the trap of gearing everything toward groups, buttons, cartoon graphics, etc. People go to news sites for news. If I want to be treated like a 12-year-old for a few minutes out of the day I'll go turn on my Wii. Tell the marketing folks that in less than three seconds on the beta site I made the decision that this is a site I'd never want to visit again.
Joe Dowd (Editor) September 28, 2012 at 03:23 pm
P.J. It's not harsh at all. It sounds like constructive criticism. Thank you. We're passing the comments along to our leaders, who also want feedback from our readers. Thank you.

Nancy, I've heard this complaint quite a bit. I'm wondering if you use the search tool to find an old story, or are you just looking on the homepage?
Nancy September 29, 2012 at 03:11 am
Micah Danney, I'm not sure how you go about using the "search"tool to find an old story. Other than being able to click on headline where it says "see more about patch", how do you find an old story? I don't see anything obvious to do a search with. Is it on the top of the page where the magnifying glass is? Do I have to know the whole headline of a story?
Micah Danney (Editor) September 29, 2012 at 05:48 am
The magnifying glass is it - the space to the left of it, to be exact. Enter any portion of a headline or keywords and you'll be given a list of search results.

Horrible. These folks love gossip. They need FACTS and lots of it. You Patch editors are continuing to post non-newsworthy details that nobody is caring about, yet you leave out everything that people Do want to learn about... Just forget the whole Patch idea already!
Gone October 3, 2012 at 01:07 pm
In my opinion you need to keep the most active stories on the front page. Meaning, if I comment on a story that is now on page three, it moves to page one. I do not like having to search for updates on stories. I tried using the e-mail alerts, but had to turn them off – e-mail overload.
Also, I suggested this in the past and you never responded to it. There are too many fragmented stories. You start a thread on a topic and then create additional threads on the same topic. If it’s something that I am interested in, I would rather not have to look in numerous places.

Hate to sound like an old woman, but when it was Von Leeson's it was always a joy to be there. AllRead More the staff had been there for years and treated the customers like family. Food was consistently good and they never "ran out" of anything. This place shouldn't be open for business. The poor kid waiting on us last time had to come to me and tell me they had no dessert to have with coffee other than ice cream. We left him a nice tip and I told him to find a job somewhere else; he'd never make any money there. It's a great location. We just need some smart business people to run it!

went there for breakfast the morning of the fair several weeks ago. First, how do you screw upRead More breakfast order? The young man server was doing his best, but still eggs, potatoes, and hash, no potatoes come, begged for coffee refills, ketchup was the very bottom of a heinz bottle. The excuse was sorry we have a new cook,..something tells me that aint the only problem, how does one screw up breakfast. Sorry wont be going back any time soon, unless I see a new mngment or new owner sign.

. This place is just not good. There is nothing appealing about poor service and absolutely horribleRead More food. It should have stayed closed when it went out of business not long ago. I hope the employees can find another means .
