Airpower Museum to Honor 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor

Wednesday's event will feature the GEICO Skytypers flying vintage aircraft.

The 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is Wednesday and the Long Island Chapter of the Air Force Association is hosting a memorial ceremony at the at Republic Airport.

Pearl Harbor survivors, History Channel Chief Historian Dr. Libby O’Connell and others will be among the guests there as the depart in vintage WWII aircraft from Republic Airport at noon.

They will drop seventy American Beauty roses over the Statue of Liberty at precisely 12:55 p.m., commemorating the exact time (Eastern time) of the attack on America’s Pacific Navy base 70 years ago.

The Dropping of the Roses/Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony is a tradition started in 1970 by the late Joseph Stanley Hydrusko to honor his fallen comrades. Hyrusko saved lives at Pearl Harbor during the Dec. 7 attack and was a candidate for the Congressional Medal of Honor. Continuing with tradition, the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony honors all Pearl Harbor veterans as well as all American veterans who served during past and present conflicts.

The public is invited to attend free of charge as After military honors, taps and blessing of the roses, the war birds and antique aircraft will perform a fly by prior to their departure for the Statue of Liberty.

The Massapequa High School Band will perform the National Anthem.
