Great Escape: OH Nails and Spa

Need a break? Return to the site each Wednesday for our weekly pick of the best local escape.

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie Sunday afternoon. Your tweens take tap on Wednesday evening.  It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier.

Easy has been the opposite of this winter. Moms and dads strapped on their boots for the daunting, tiring task of snow removal and spreading salt on top of the daily duties of cooking, cleaning, laundry, bills, homework, working, and so forth.

Following the ice storm, where I unintentionally practiced a “figure 8” down my driveway, I decided enough was enough and I needed some time to myself so I could relax, unwind and recharge. With three children, a full-time job, and a to-do list a mile long, I could only carve out one hour for alone time, so I headed to my favorite nail salon in Farmingdale – (180 Merritts Road, Farmingdale; 516-753-3114).

As I sat in the chair enjoying a long-overdue and much-needed manicure (have you seen what non-stop shoveling can do to your hands?), I was whisked away to a serene place as another OH Nails team member gave me an invigorating back and neck massage.  As I peeked at the other patrons in the chairs, I saw the same expression on each of their faces – pure bliss (and probably memories of summertime).  When my manicure was complete, and my nails were glistening with painted perfection (I went with my usual favorite shade of red – Boudreaux by Essie nail polish), it was time to kick-off the snow boots for my highly-anticipated pedicure.

While reading the latest gossip magazine, I let all my stress slip away as I enjoyed soaking my sore feet in warm bubbles.  With the automatic chair massager working its magic and the lovely woman tending to my tired soles, I drifted away in every moment and enjoyed the peace.

What’s better than treating yourself to an hour at the nail salon?  How about a bargain?  Mondays through Wednesdays, OH Nails & Spa offers a manicure and pedicure for only $20. Other services, including waxing, massages and specialty nail treatments, vary in price. Gratuities are not included in pricing.  Appointments are recommended but walk-ins are welcome.  MasterCard, Visa, Discover and cash are accepted.  Convenient, free parking available.

Located next to the Merritt Shopping Center, OH Nails & Spa is open Monday – Friday, 9:30 am – 7:30 pm; Saturday, 9 am – 6:30 pm; closed on Sundays.

Once dried, me and my 20 little friends (10 fingers and 10 toes), carefully walked back to my car just as it started to flurry.  It was back to the daily – and snowy – grind, but this time I’ll be shoveling with a little bit of color – and not just on my rosy cheeks.
