LIRR Delays, Cancellations Continue Tuesday

The 4:54 train on the Ronkonkoma line has been canceled.

Eastbound trains are canceled and delays are expected during the Tuesday evening rush, as Amtrak continues its repair work in an East River tunnel after a derailment Sunday.

Of the 87 trains normally operated out of Penn Station during the evening commute, a total of 20 will be canceled and combined with other trains. As a result, some trains will be more crowded, according to a statement on the LIRR website

On the Ronkonkoma Branch the 4:54 p.m. train from New York due in Farmingdale at 5:56 p.m. is cancelled. Commuters will be accommodated by the 5:01 p.m. train from New York to Ronkonkoma, which will make all added stops.

Westbound service to Penn Station will terminate at Jamaica beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m. NYC Transit will be honoring LIRR tickets at Jamaica for the E line and at Woodside for the No. 7 line to the city.

LIRR officials said they expect Wednesday's commute to be more of the same, with cancellations during both the morning and evening rush. Restoration of full service on Thursday is "directly dependent on the progress of Amtrak's repairs," officials said.

Among the repairs, Amtrak crews are replacing 275 damaged track ties. Once repairs are completed, testing must also be performed before the tunnel can be restored for train service, officials said.
