Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that the United States Navy Blue Angels will headline the 11th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. Additional performers are also being planned now, organizers said Friday.
The airshow, which draws hundreds of thousands of people to the iconic Long Island beach, will take place Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25.
The visit will mark the military jet team’s sixth appearance at the show.
On Friday, military performers confirmed to date include: the Blue Angels and the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team. A complete line-up for 2014 air show will be provided in the coming months.
Among the planes expected for the show are a collection of World War II-era "Warbirds," some of which are housed at Farmingdale's American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport.
“After the United States Air Force Thunderbirds were forced to cancel air show performances last year due to government sequester budget cuts, we couldn’t be more thrilled the Blue Angels have committed to perform at this year’s show," said George Gorman, Deputy Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. "We welcome the team back to Long Island with great enthusiasm.”The Blue Angels’ last visit to the Bethpage Air Show took place in 2012 when more than 400,000 spectators attended the airshow.
“Memorial Day weekend is an important time to honor the brave men and women of our country’s military,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Bethpage. “Our audience this year will certainly be grateful to have a returning military presence.”
