Route 110 Closes for Bridge Demolition

Motorists are advised to avoid near the Northern State Parkway this weekend as demolition of the 65-year-old Northern State Parkway bridge is planned.

Route 110 will be partially closed during the day on Saturday, March 10 and fully shut down on Sunday, March 11, the New York State Department of Transportation announced. Drivers are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes or be prepared to experience long delays in the Melville, Farmingdale and Huntington areas. 

On Saturday, a single northbound and a single southbound travel lane will remain open to traffic from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Route 110 will then be fully closed for the remainder of Saturday night and throughout Sunday. The road is expected to be fully open to motorists by 5 a.m. Monday in time for the morning commute, the DOT said.

Only local southbound traffic will be permitted on Route 110 between Schwab Road and the Northern State Parkway bridge during the full closure on Sunday. Police officers will be on the road to assist residents, business owners and shoppers in the area through the construction, said Eileen Peters, the public information officer for the DOT.

The daytime closures are in addition to the regularly scheduled full nighttime closures of the road that have been in effect as part of the $56 million NY Route 110-NSP Interchange Replacement Project.   

The demolition of the old bridge will help facilitate the construction of the new bridge over Route 110. Peters said that the new bridge will be partially constructed out of stone from the the old bridge as part of the department's preservation efforts.

In addition, as part of this project, entrance and exit ramps are being reconfigured and NY Route 110 is being widened. Other improvements, such as sidewalks and pedestrian facilities, adequate vertical clearance for trucks, drainage, landscaping and other improvements are planned.
