Question of the Day: a Community Center

Should Farmingdale help find a new location for La Case Comunal?

A community center that assisted Latino immigrants closed this weekend, evicted to make room for another project.

offered English classes, friendly faces and help with navigating the American legal and business community. As of this weekend, it had no place to move, and put all of its possessions in storage.

Should others in Farmingdale help find another location? Or has the center outlived its usefulness? Tell us in the comments.

I think a new community center can be worked out. Maybe at a portioned off section of the old Waldbaums, or the soon to be refurbished Allen Park location or a section of the church. No matter our feelings on the immigration issue, the La Casa Comunal did a fine job integrating the Latino community into our social spheres, taught the language and helped the businesses thrive. I say we have a church sponsored initiative and get a move on before winter sets in.

We are a Community & we should help ALL our Members!!! It was not too long ago when our Parents, Grandparents, Great Grandparents were immigrants.

Sal: Thank you so much for the affirmation. I called St. Kilian Church and spoke with the Business Manager as Mr. Bartone's office manager suggested. Since the regional grammar school, St. John the Baptist, is closing, it was thought they would have room to spare. However, because our work requires an early AM opening and sometimes a late close, Mr. Shanley didn't think La Casa Comunal would be a good usage fit. They are hoping to rent to a day care center with shorter hours of operation. I did ask them to find space for our Spanish AA meeting that meets on Friday and Sunday nights but would be flexible regarding days. I was amazed to find what a hopping place St. Kilian's parish center is. They have absolutely no available time slots! I guess for them, that's good. I do hope we find something within the Village before winter sets in. Que sera, sera.
