Crimes Nearby: 2 Accused of Assaulting Cops

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County  and Suffolk County Police Departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate conviction.

Massapequa

Two Amityville women assaulted a pair of cops Saturday after one of them was placed under arrest for using children to shoplift, police said.

Clara Young, 23, was spotted by security at a Pathmark in Massapequa filling a shopping cart along with two kids, aged 9 and  10 at about 4:40 p.m.

Young exited the store with the 10-year-old, and got into a car parked outside, while the 9-year-old tried to push the cart out of the store wthout paying, cops said.

All three were stopped by store security, who called police and Young's friend Shakeeta Legette, 29, the mother of the two boys.

When cops tried to arrest Young, she allegedly began to hit them.  Legette then joined in and also assaulted the officers, cops said.

One officer sustained a shoulder injury while the other officer hurt his elbow. They were treated at a local hospital, police said.

Young was charged with petty larceny, assault 2nd and resisting arrest, while Legette was charged with assault 2nd, endangering the welfare of a child and obstruction of governmental administration.

Babylon

Two MTA police officers suffered minor injuries as they attempted to subdue a fight at the Babylon LIRR station last week.

According to police, the two officers were answering an elevator alarm when they came upon two men fighting as they were exiting a westbound train.

Police said James Finnegan pushed another man in the face and that man fell and struck his head on the pavement. While trying to subdue Finnegan, the two officers suffered minor injuries. Police did not provide a hometown for Finnegan and did not release the identity of the man who was injured.

Finnegan was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and one count of resisting arrest.

Riverhead

A new DWI task force created to target offenders driving while drinking and drugging on the East End netted seven arrests and 28 summonses on Saturday night, police say.

The arrests took place only in Riverhead Town; the task force also set out to nab DWI additional offenders across the East End.

Garden City

A Mineola man was arrested on May 25 after allegedly breaking a store window at the at 2399 Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park at 12:45 a.m. Harpreet Singh, 24, also allegedly spat at officers and kicked one while being arrested. 

New Hyde Park

A Dairy Barn  in North New Hyde Park was robbed Saturday night.

According to Nassau County Police, a male white wearing a white t-shirt, blue shorts and short blond hair entered the barn store on 938 Hillside Ave., took a pack of cigarettes placed them on the counter and demanded money from the 20 year old store clerk.

The thief then pushed the employee to the side and took an unknown amount of cash from the register before felling on foot southbound on Franklin Avenue and proceeded west onto Irons Place.

Long Beach

Two Long Beach men were arrested Tuesday night after allegedly robbing a woman at knifepoint in Island Park.

According to Nassau County detectives, a 21-year-old woman was walking home on Long Beach Road onto the Arlington Walk Way when she was approached by two males that both displayed knives and demanded that she hand over her pocketbook at 11:55 p.m.

The two males, Rakim Cole, 20, and Kaic Santos, 18, both of Long Beach, took the pocketbook, which contained an undetermined amount of cash, and left the alleyway, police said.

A short time later, Nassau County Police and a MTA K-9 officer were able to apprehend and arrest both suspects, police said. All proceeds were recovered.

There were no injuries reported.

Cole was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery and fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon.

Santos was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.

Greenport

Thomas Frangidane, 42, of Medford was charged with second-degree assault on May 26 at 6:46 p.m., after police responded to a report that Frangidane threw a glass plate at a 51-year-old Woodmere man at in Greenport, police said. The victim was taken to to be treated for his injuries.
