Detectives Probe Suspicious Fire in Backhoe

Blaze destroys Komatsu excavator parked in Hicksville.

Nassau detectives are investigating a fire inside the cab of a backhoe Saturday that appears to have been set.

The Arson Bomb Squad said the fire was reported Saturday at 2:20 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found a 2000 Komatsu excavator ablaze. The backhoe was parked in the locked area of the Nassau County Storm Water Basin No. 54 located off Ballpark Lane in Hicksville.

The cab of the excavator was consumed by fire. The damage is estimated at $10,000 and the vehicle can not be operated.

The Arson Bomb Squad and Fire Marshal are investigating the fire, which appears suspicious.
