Nassau County Police became embroiled in a violent struggle in South Farmingdale Saturday after confronting two men in an abandoned home.
Second Precinct officers responded to a home on Carmen Gate following a report of suspicious persons. When they arrived they encountered a father and son, Steven Merrill, 51 and James Merrill, 21 both of of 57 Birch Ave., East Farmingdale inside an abandoned home. The suspects were escorted outside for arrest.
But once outside, James Merrill pushed an officer and fled on foot, police said. Officers gave chase and when they caught up to him a violent struggle occurred, police said. Merrill was eventually subdued, but not before injuring two officers.
The officers were taken an area hospital. One officer was treated for a fractured hand and back injury. The second was treated for back pain and a sprained ankle and hand. After treatment they were both released.

The investigation revealed the defendants forced their way into the residence to steal copper piping. Police recovered a bag containing bolt cutters, flashlights, wrenches, screwdrivers, pipe cutters and other tools.
Both defendants were charged with burglary and possession of burglars tools. The younger Merrill was charged with felony assault.
Both men were arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.
