Farmingdale Teens Struck by Car; Boy 'Critical'

Two are struck while standing on curb by 17-year-old driver; girl OK.

Two 16-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were struck down on a Farmingdale sidewalk Friday near the High School, leaving the boy in critical condition at an area hospital, police said. 

A 17-year-old driver was at the wheel when he plowed into the pedestrians, who were on the curb on Parkdale Drive about 2:20 p.m. Friday, Nassau County detectives reported. The street is about two blocks east of Farmingdale High School and just north of the Southern State Parkway.

Police said the unidentified male victim suffered a serious head injury and was listed in critical condition at an area hospital.

The unidentified girl suffered an arm injury; She has been treated and released.

The victims were standing at the curb when the driver, who has not been identified, could not negotiate a sharp curve, police said. His 2001 Oldsmobile Alero drifted to the opposite side of the road, striking the victims, according to police. Both victims were transported by ambulance crews from the scene.

Parkdale Drive makes a sharp curve as it continues northward toward Grant Street.

The investigation, which involves no criminality at this time, is ongoing, police said. The Oldsmobile was impounded for routine safety checks.
