Freight Train Strikes Person at Hicksville

Trains at a standstill early Monday on Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson branches.

Early morning commuter trains were at a standstill shortly after midnight Monday when a freight train struck a person at Hicksville.

About 2 a.m. Monday, the Long Island Rail Road said an "unauthorized person on the tracks" was struck by a New York & Atlantic freight train. The incident occurred near the Hicksville station.

There was no indication of what happened to the individual who was struck, authorities said.

At least two eastbound trains, one each on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma lines from Penn Station were being held in Jamaica. Two westbound trains were being held at Huntington and Bethpage, respectively, because of the incident.

It was not immediately clear if the incident would impact the morning rush hour.
