Limited LIRR Service Returning East of Farmingdale

BREAKING: Occupant of car reported killed after LIRR train carrying no passengers collides with vehicle east near Brentwood.

Service is partially returning to normal between Farmingdale Station and Ronkonkoma after an LIRR train collided with an unauthorized vehicle on the tracks east of Brentwood, the LIRR announced.

An occupant of the car died in the collision, Newsday is reporting. Earlier, an LIRR spokeswoman said the driver had sustained serious injuries.

A second occupant was unhurt. The train was not carrying passengers at the time of the crash near the Brentwood station, the spokeswoman said.

Limited eastbound service has resumed east of Farmingdale, the LIRR reported. Residual delays of about 30 minutes are expected. Officials said the crumpled vehicle has been removed and LIRR personnel were inspecting the tracks for damage before train service can be safely restored.

LIRR officials estimate that full or nearly-full service will be restored in the next hour.

If possible, riders are advised to take alternate LIRR service on the Babylon/Montauk and Port Jefferson branches.
