Rescue workers managed to bring a mother and her two young children back from the brink of death Thursday in an apparent carbon monoxide incident.
Authorities were alerted by a man who was driving his wife and two children in Amityville at about 4 p.m. had fallen unconscious while driving, police said. The two children – a 22-month-old boy and 8-month-old boy – were in car seats in the back. The man was still alert.
East Farmingdale firefighters and Suffolk County Police responded and administered oxygen to the victims, who were not breathing at the time. A Good Samaritan also assisted, administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to one of the victims.
The three were breathing on their own within minutes and transported to an area hospital, police said.
Police believe the unusual incident was caused by a malfunction in the vehicle, a 1999 Mitsubishi. The car was impounded for a safety check; the investigation is ongoing, police said.
