Farmingdale Buried in about 10 Inches of Snow

Crews working to clear main roads; side streets clogged for now.

Farmingdale awakened to about 10 inches of snow, bitter cold and stiff winds from the first major snow storm of 2014.

Side streets are still filled with snow but the authorities say they must clear the main thoroughfares first and will get to the side streets. Most neighboring communities got about the same amount as Farmingdale; slightly less was reported to the north and west.

According to Mike Silva, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Office in Upton, the storm held no surprises.

"This pretty much panned out exactly as we expected," he said. "We expected six to 10 inches of snow, with maybe a little bit higher out east. Some places managed to touch a foot."

Winds, however, weren't quite as fierce as initially predicted, but were starting to pick up Friday morning, with "very dangerous" temperatures across Long Island. With the wind chill factor, some areas felt as though it were minus 11 degrees, with a range of minus three to minus eight.

Temperatures are not expected to rise higher than the upper teens for most of Long Island Friday.

Two last bands of snow are slated to continue moving across Long Island Friday morning, one in Suffolk County and one over northern Nassau; another inch or two of snow will fall by 1 p.m., before the storm departs the area completely.
