A Queens man was charged with stealing a large collection of rare coins from a parked car in nearby Levittown Sunday afternoon, Nassau County Police said.
Officers responded to a Straight Lane home Sunday for a report of a larceny. The subjects fled the scene in a blue Dodge Caravan with out-of-state license plates, police said.
An assisting officer then observed a vehicle matching the description and followed the van westbound on Hempstead Turnpike into the Nassau Mall parking lot, according to police.
After losing sight of the vehicle, the driver ran through the parking lot and after a brief foot pursuit, he was placed into custody without incident, police said.
The defendant’s vehicle, which was occupied by two other unknown subjects who fled the scene, was located in the parking lot with the proceeds from the theft, police said.
Police charged Steven Cano, 25, with second-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal mischief. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on Monday.
Detectives request anyone with information regarding the two other unknown subjects to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
