Farmingdale residents are digging out from a major winter storm that pounded Long Island and the Eastern Seaboard for a 24-hour period beginning early Friday.
The storm dumped up to two feet of snow or more on Suffolk County and about a foot-and-a-half on Plainview. Drifts range much higher. Local streets are becoming passable and most businesses are open.
Main arteries are moving through Nassau, including Route 135 and Hempstead Turnpike, but slowly.
Authorities are recommending people stay off the roads Saturday.
Suffolk County was hit far worse. Scores of travelers were stranded on the Long Island Expressway east of Melville for hours overnight. The LIE and other major Suffolk roadways remain closed. The parkways are open, but slick and slow.
The Long Island Rail Road reported significant delays on its Ronkonkoma Branch. The limited service through Hicksville and to and from Bethpage and Farmingdale is due to icing conditions. The Port Jefferson line through Hicksville and toward Syosset and Huntington is also impacted due to snow accumulation and third rail icing conditions.
New York City was spared the brunt of the storm and road conditions improve as travelers drive west.
