State Police Release Stats from Buckle Up Campaign

Troop L issued 439 seatbelt violations during the two weeks.

Troop L, the New York State Police division based in Farmingdale, finished the 29th wave of Buckle Up New York enforcement on June 5.

The troop conducted nine check points in Nassau and Suffolk counties from May 23 to June 5. Troopers issued 439 seatbelt violations, including eight child restraint violations during the enforcement wave.

This wave of enforcement also included a nighttime checkpoint. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nighttime passenger vehicle occupants are among those least likely to buckle up and most likely to die in crashes. Of those who died in nighttime crashes in 2009, nearly two-thirds (62 percent) were not wearing seatbelts at the time of their fatal crashes.
